Production Trends

Aquaculture in the Philippines is carried out in diverse ecosystems (freshwater, brackish water and marine) using various culture systems with different degrees of intensification. Most production comes from the farming of seaweed, with milkfish and tilapia the most important fish species.

Regional & Global Significance

Based on 2013 FAO data the Philippines:

Ranked 7th among the top fish producing countries in the world with its total production of 4.7 million tonnes of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and aquatic plants (including seaweed).

Production of 0.815 million tonnes aquaculture production of fish, crustaceans and mollusks ranked 11th in the world.

The world's 3rd largest producer of aquatic plants (including seaweed) having produced a total of 1.56 million tonnes.

Outlook & Potential

Targets of the 2016 - 2020 Comprehensive National Fisheries Industry Development Plan (CNFIDP) include:

1% annual growth in municipal captured fish with consideration of proper management interventions.

5% annual growth in commercial captured fish in new fishing grounds or with positive management interventions.

Increase in aquaculture production for key species (milkfish 4%, tilapia 6%, shrimp 10%).

Reduction of post-harvest losses from 25% to 15% in 5 years and 100% compliance of facilities to hygiene and sanitation.

Increase the value and volume of traded fish and fishery products for domestic and export.
